Add-on Courses
The department has a strong tradition of offering skill-enriching add-on courses alongside the regular curriculum, enhancing employability and entrepreneurship among students:
- Biopesticide Technology (since 2004): Students learn to formulate eco-friendly biopesticides using microbial and botanical agents. The course includes laboratory sessions, field exposure, and documentation of pest management practices.
- Sericulture (UGC-sanctioned, since 2014): Covers the full cycle of silk production — from rearing silkworms to post-cocoon processing. Students gain hands-on experience with silkworm rearing in the departmental facility.
- Wildlife and Photography (since 2019): An open elective for all first-semester students. Combines principles of wildlife biology, animal behaviour, and conservation photography through field visits, expert lectures, and practical photography sessions.
Internships
Students are encouraged to undertake internships at research institutions, wildlife reserves, zoological parks, fisheries stations, and biotechnology firms. The department facilitates internship placements with organisations such as the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), St.Teresa’sCollege, Ernakulam, Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha and regional fisheries development boards. Internship reports are submitted and evaluated as part of the academic curriculum.
Intercollegiate and Interdepartmental Fests
The department actively organises and participates in intercollegiate and interdepartmental events that promote scientific temper and healthy academic competition:
- Nature Club and Biodiversity Club Activities: Annual celebrations of World Environment Day, World Wildlife Day, and World Biodiversity Day, with invited expert talks, poster competitions, nature walks, and conservation pledges.
- Intercollegiate Zoology Fests: The department organises and participates in events featuring quiz competitions, specimen identification contests, scientific paper presentations, and photography exhibitions.
- Interdepartmental Science Fests: Collaborative events with departments of Botany, Chemistry, and Physics, promoting interdisciplinary engagement.
