Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology at Deva Matha College (Autonomous), Kuravilangad, is one of the pioneering science departments of the college, tracing its roots to the very founding year of the institution in 1964. The department formally became an undergraduate department in 1968 with the introduction of the B.Sc. Zoology programme. Over more than five decades, the department has evolved into a centre of excellence in biological sciences, combining rigorous academic instruction with cutting-edge research and a deep commitment to environmental conservation.

The department is distinguished by its state-of-the-art Arachnology Research Laboratory, established in 2013 — a unique facility in Kerala dedicated to the study of spiders, particularly theraphosid spiders of the Western Ghats. The iconic Biodiversity Museum of the department, housing more than 1,000 preserved animal specimens, is widely regarded as one of the finest zoological museums among arts and science colleges in Kerala. The department has attracted substantial research funding, receiving grants totalling approximately ₹55 lakhs under two major and two minor research projects during the period 2010–2020.

The department’s vision is to nurture competent zoologists, researchers, and environmentally responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to science and society. Its mission is to deliver outcome-based education grounded in the principles of biodiversity conservation, scientific inquiry, and applied life sciences.
