The Department of English was established alongside the institution in 1964 and has since grown into one of its most distinguished academic units. A significant milestone was reached in 1968 with the introduction of the B.A. in English Language and Literature, which elevated the department to First Grade status. The launch of the Postgraduate programme in 1998 further strengthened its academic standing, and in 2014, the department achieved the prestigious designation of a Research Department.Over its six decades of existence, the department has served as a formative space for numerous accomplished educators and exceptionally talented students, all of whom have contributed meaningfully to its enduring legacy. The department’s scholarly engagement is reflected in the successful completion of six UGC-assisted minor research projects. Today, it operates as a fully functional academic unit, led by a dedicated team of nine faculty members who are deeply committed to the intellectual and personal development of their students.
Students of the department actively participate in college-wide activities, making substantial contributions to the institution’s reputation and prestige. Beyond academic achievement, the department takes a holistic approach to education, guiding students toward meaningful career pathways across diverse professional fields. The department also maintains its own YouTube channel as a platform for academic outreach and engagement.

The department has a robust tradition of academic and cultural engagement, having organized numerous invited lectures, as well as national and international conferences over the years, theatrical productions have been a consistent feature of departmental life, with students regularly staging plays that showcase their creative and performing abilities.

LEAP (Language Empowerment and Assessment Programme)

The department creates opportunities for students to participate in literacy programmes and
initiatives that involve teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). These outreach activities
place students in real teaching and facilitation roles, allowing them to apply their linguistic
knowledge in meaningful community contexts. As part of the department’s commitment to pedagogical experimentation, arrangements are made for interested students to conduct sessions in nearby schools. Under appropriate supervision, students engage with school students in English language and literature activities, functioning as junior educators and language facilitators.
This initiative serves a dual purpose: it provides the school students with additional, enthusiastic
engagement in English, while giving the college students a formative experience of classroom
dynamics, lesson planning, and the rewards and challenges of teaching. It nurtures a sense of
social responsibility alongside professional readiness.
At the MG University Youth Festival, the department’s students have performed with remarkable distinction. Students have distinguished themselves in intercollegiate competitions, earning recognition across a wide range of events.

Most notably, the department secured the Arts Fest Championship for the sixteenth consecutive year — a remarkable achievement that stands as a testament to the extraordinary dedication, collaborative spirit, and exceptional talent of its students.

The department also organizes a range of structured annual activities designed to foster intellectual curiosity and creative expression among students. These include a quarterly paper presentation series titled DERF, organized by the PG students of the Department, a Yearly Intercollegiate Literary Quiz and a Yearly Intercollegiate Dissertation Competition, which provide students with platforms to demonstrate academic rigour and critical thinking. “Bheri”, a student-led talk show featuring participants from the host institution as well as invited students from other colleges, is professionally videographed and published on the department’s official YouTube channel, extending its reach to a wider audience. Additionally, students curate and publish a Yearly House Magazine, “Rainbow”, reflecting the department’s commitment to nurturing literary creativity and student voice.
