Department of Politics

Established in 1964, the Department of Political Science at Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad, has a storied history of academic service spanning over six decades. The department’s foundation was laid by Prof. N.C. Kuriakose M.A., who served as Head from its inception until 1995, establishing a legacy of scholarly rigor that continues to define its mission today. Operating as a specialized academic unit, the department is currently focused on the successful implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 through the delivery of high-quality Minor and Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC). These offerings are designed to provide students from diverse academic backgrounds with a critical understanding of political systems, governance, and civic rights, ensuring that a foundational knowledge of political science remains accessible to the wider college community.

Beyond its core academic instruction, the department serves as a vibrant center for practical civic training and leadership development. Through the coordination of the Electoral Literacy Club and with the expert assistance of the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs, the department provides specialized training and skill-building programs that empower students to become active participants in the democratic process. This commitment to nurturing political consciousness is further realized through experiential learning modules, including the conduct of Mock Parliaments, national commemorative events, and competitive quizzing. By blending theoretical insights with these hands-on activities, the department ensures that students develop the analytical skills and ethical mindset necessary to engage responsibly with the challenges of contemporary society.
